Fertility Treatment - A nourishing approach.
To help you achieve a healthy pregnancy we look at all aspects of you and your partner’s health. We use Chinese
herbs and acupuncture to help you conceive naturally. Your treatment will be designed for you by Maria Berry who has
spent 10 years at the front of Reproductive Medicine in Hong Kong & China.

Male Infertility
A study published by the World Health Organisation (1992) found that in at least 50% of infertile couples, male factor
was contributing to the problem.
Modern medicine has little to offer couples with male infertility. IVF with ICSI is invasive, expensive and has a very low
success rate.
Chinese herbs have been shown to significantly improve the production of healthy sperm by strengthening the functions
of the male reproductive organs. In many of our cases the couple conceive naturally, having produced more sperm,
better quality sperm or more strong-swimming sperm. Some couples, despite improved sperm, opt to resume ART -
often they can opt for less invasive and less expensive procedures such as IUI.
A recent study (University of Kent, UK) clearly demonstrated that taking Chinese herbs significantly reduced
chromosomal abnormalities in the sperm of infertile men. So by taking Chinese Herbs not only will your path to
pregnancy be easier but your children will be healthier too.
Female Infertility
As Chinese Medicine doctors we observe that many female reproduction problems can be resolved if the menstrual
cycle is smooth, regular and symptom free. So the main focus of your treatment is to regulate your hormone so that
the infinite changes which happen in your body throughout your cycle do not distract from the ripening & releasing of
your eggs then the thickening of your uterus’ lining.
By improving egg quality and strengthening the lining of the womb, we increase your chances of successful implantation.
This is particularly important for older patients.
The effects of Chinese Medicine results in reduced levels of circulating FSH (follicle stimulating hormone). Many fertility
specialists regard this condition as untreatable and advise women to consider using donor eggs.
Experience has shown that when these women follow a course of TCM, their FSH levels may fall, improving their
chances of success in an assisted conception treatment cycle using their own eggs.
Polycystic Ovaries
If you have PCO you may often fail to ovulate regularly and have prolonged menstrual cycles. In effect the ovary is
storing fluids which is gradually becoming thicker and forming nodules or cysts. These cysts block the eggs in the ovary
while forming a barrier to blood and nutrients. We treat PCO by dissolving the cysts, draining the fluids from the
abdomen and letting the healthy nutrient blood circulate through the ovaries.
Endometriosis/Ectopic pregnancy/Blocked fallopian tubes
Chinese Medicine regards endometriosis as blood which has moved out its normal circuit and become stuck forming
deposits in the lower abdomen. This problem may cause ectopic pregnancy and damaged fallopian tubes.
In cases like this, healthy blood cannot circulate well in lower abdomen. The focus of your treatment must be to re-
establish the circulation in the lower abdomen and clear away any obstructions.
Peri-menopausal/Unexplained infertility/Recurrent miscarriages
Elevated FSH often appears in older women, but it is not unusual for younger women to have this problem too. If this is
so then your ovaries are struggling to support your egg follicle’s growth. Chinese Medicine regards this as a deficiency
and prescribes tonics. When your eggs grow more readily then you will readily support the growth of a baby to term.
Whether unexplained infertility or recurrent miscarriage the single issue we focus on is the egg quality, TCM can
promote the reproductive system, which benefits the egg quality, encouraging fertilisation and a healthy pregnancy.
Chinese Medicine & IVF treatment
By improving the quality of your eggs &sperm, by improving the flow of blood through your reproductive system and by
balancing your hormones, we give you the best chance of achieving and maintaining a healthy pregnancy. As a result,
the assisted cycles you have will be more effective.
Natural medicine takes time – most couples will see & feel the benefits of our treatment in the first month and continue
to improve through a 3rd or 4th month. So to get the most from our treatment we recommend you start several cycles
before you embark on assisted fertility treatment.
We will not start herbal fertility treatment once you are taking drugs for any assisted reproduction treatment. You might
consider acupuncture support.
Acupuncture & IVF Support
TCM practitioners have long believed that acupuncture can help improve the success of assisted fertility treatments.
Now several studies have measured the effect of adding acupuncture to an IVF protocol.
Overall, the studies show acupuncture improved a woman's chances of pregnancy by 65%.
Many patients now ask us for help during their IVF treatment. We have therefore put together a two-session package to
assist couples who are seeking acupuncture whilst undergoing an IVF programme.
Session 1 is given on the 2nd or 3rd day after egg retrieval (pick up/harvest/collection). This treatment reduces any
trauma in the uterus after the surgery. It relaxes the uterus and cervix, stops excessive clotting and re-establishes
healthy circulation in the uterus. This treatment helps prepare you for pregnancy.
Session 2 is given ASAP after embryo transfer to increase the blood flow in your uterus to make it softer, moister and
richer. All this makes creates a more receptive uterine lining & facilitates implantation.
